October concerts and events

I didn't have a chance to publish information about the Boulder Phil Discovery Concerts in my September post, but I had a great time performing the second movement of the Concerto for Oboe and Violin by J.S. Bach for school students today and yesterday! October is often a busy performance month, and this year appears to be no exception. Here is what's happening:

Tuesday, October 4: Convocation at 12:30 PM, Concert at 7:30 PM at Western State College in Gunnison

May, June, and July - Maternity Leave

One of the benefits of being self-employed is that I get to determine my own maternity leave! My baby is due on June 12, so I am taking May (mostly) off to prepare and June and July to enjoy my new role as new mother. I have some teaching and other professional activities continuing in May, but only with the flexibility to cancel should the need arise. I may or may not decide to accept performing gigs in August, depending on how things are going. However, I am already very anxious to get back to performing, so look for new concert dates to be posted in the late summer or early fall! Have a great summer, everyone!

A couple of weeks later, I traveled over the Rockies again to Durango, Colorado for the Music in the Mountains Festival finale concert. What a cool oboe section!

Another bit of good news is that I will play principal oboe with the Steamboat Springs Orchestra this season! The opening concert is in early October and includes Beethoven's Third Symphony. Check out the link on the right for more information. September concert listing coming soon!

Photo-less Vacation Diary

In a break from my typical concert listings, this is a post about my vacation to NYC. I forgot to take a camera, but one of the many benefits of the internet is that I can get professional photos of the places I went just by surfing the web!

Saturday three of us went to a pizza place before enjoying Gavin Lodge's performance in Spamalot. Then we hit the meatpacking district, saw lots of fancy cars, and enjoyed calamari at Pastis. Delicious beverages were consumed at the Spice Market before we called it a night/early morning.

Sunday we took in the gardens and escaped the rain at the Cloisters. We visited our friends' place in Harlem before heading to Spring Street Natural Restaurant, where the highlight was Baker Tina's strawberry pie!

Monday's excursions included the Guggenheim Museum. Though under construction, we enjoyed the areas that were open for a reduced rate. We walked Madison Avenue, sampled jeans at Barney's, then enjoyed a beverage at Grand Central Station before heading to the Upright Citizen's Brigade, where we witnessed some very funny acts including a performance by Kristen Schaal, aka "Mel" from Flight of the Conchords.

Tuesday I actually made a clothing purchase at Hanna's in SoHo (blue tank and white three-quarter sleeve). The last day of a trip is the best day to shop, I think. We also went to Teany ("Moby's place"), but sadly they did not have any lavender lemonade available. Then we went on the new Irish family tour at the Tenement Museum before picking up our luggage and going out for our final NYC beverage at the Modern. Thanks to all of our friends who helped us out, hung out with us, and made the trip so much fun!

I love the muppets!!! Which muppet do I most resemble?

You Are Kermit

Hi, ho! Lovable and friendly, you get along well with everyone you know.
You're a big thinker, and sometimes you over think life's problems.
Don't worry - everyone know's it's not easy being green.
Just remember, time's fun when you're having flies!

Music for Peace Concert Raises $172!

The wonderful audience members at today's Music for Peace Concert contributed $87 for the Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts and $85 for UNICEF!

Many thanks to the performers who contributed their time! It was a wonderful program with lots of variety, including works by Bach, Telemann, Mertz, Debussy, Handel, Ibert, Gershwin, and ending with a great jazz combo performing McCoy Tyner's "Search for Peace."

Some comments from audience members:

"Marvelous talent!"
"Tenly - I loved Fantasy No. 12!"
"I really enjoyed the guitar and oboe performance."
"The jazz combo was a nice ending twist!"

Special thanks to the RMCMA for donating the space and the Musicians' Alliance for Peace for launching the Music for Peace Project!
